Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said that the government would not bow down to any external pressure in the matter of the ongoing anti-narcotics drive.
“We will not bow down to any external pressure. The United Nations and our foreign friends may observe the drive if they think that they have right,” he said.The minister said this at a programme at Bangabandhu International Convention Center in the capital on Sunday.
Obaidul Quader, in charge of Awami League General Secretary also, said the anti-drug drive is going on and will continue until the mission is fulfilled.
Regarding the murder of Teknaf Ward Councillor Akramul Haque, he said if Akramul was innocent, those who labelled him as drug peddler will be brought to justice.
No Yaba godfather, nor even Abdur Rahman Bodi, would be spared if charges against them are proved.
Replying to another question that 10 eminent citizens called for an end to extrajudicial killings, he said every citizen regardless of identity has the right to criticize the government.
In another programme in Dhaka, Obaidul Quader directed the utility service providers in the capital to stop the ongoing development works on roads from Sunday till Eid-ul-Fitr.
All development works including metro rail project would be closed, he said at a preparatory discussion on Eid.
The minister also directed authorities, transport operators, workers and people concerned to keep wreckers on roads, not to run unfit vehicles on roads, and drive on wrong lanes and jam at toll plazas during Eid time.
