The BNP-led 20 party alliance on Thursday said that the Election Commission had no directions to stop showdown during Awami League candidates’ nomination form collection.
But they gave the directions to stop BNP aspirants’ showdown during nomination for collection. It is the sample of level playing field? asked Colonel (rtd) Oli Ahmed, the alliance leader and President
of Democratic Liberal Party (LDP) at a press briefing at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office.
He added, “We want to put ahead some questions before the nation. Awami League nomination seekers collected forms from their party office few days ago with elephants, band parties and huge showdown. The EC had no directions then to stop that. But when BNP men started collecting forms with slogans the EC had directed the police to stop it. And police started attack on BNP men at party’s Nayapaltan office. Is it the sample of level playing field?”
The alliance leader alleged that the ‘helmet worn group’ was ruling party men who vandalized and set ablaze the police van.
Oli Ahmed warned that if the government and the EC failed to create a level playing field then the alliance would be compelled to reconsider its decision on joining the polls.
BNP Standing Committee Member and Coordinator of the alliance Nazrul Islam Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Halim and other leaders of the alliance were present at the briefing.
Apart from these, the BNP leaders also alleged that the Awami League government has been trying to keep opposition parties out of the national election by concocting various conspiracies.
They also claimed that BNP activists were targeted first in the Wednesday’s clash in front of its Nayapaltan office.
“When BNP supporters gathered at their main office, police and some individuals attacked them. Police are also filing various cases against opposition party leaders and activists. Their target is to keep the BNP away from the 11th national polls,” said BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu while addressing a discussion meeting at the National Press Club yesterday.
