UNB, Dhaka :
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that the government has resorted to a repressive path to ‘free’ the country from its opponents.
“The government is filing false cases against our leader Khaleda Zia…there’s no opposition leader who is not facing at least 10-15 cases. The motive behind filing the false cases is to make the country free from politics and opposition party,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, he also said ‘false’ cases are being filed against opposition men to make sure that the country will only be run by a ‘single party, Awami League’. Bangladesh Nationalist British Law Students’ Association arranged the programme at the Supreme Court Bar auditorium.
Fakhrul said, the current ‘authoritarian regime’ has put the country into deep crisis by ‘annihilating democracy and imposing its misrule’. He renewed his party’s call for a dialogue to overcome the crisis through a national consensus.
Mentioning that BNP has no aim to go to power, Fakhrul said, “We want to ensure a proper election system through which power can be handed
over in a peaceful way. We also want to protect people’s voting rights so that a representative government is formed.”
He also criticised the government for what he said blocking the release of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman by showing him arrested in a fresh case. “The move was taken to keep him in jail and harass him with a political motive.”
