Govt wants to extract oil, gas from Bay: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said two avant-garde Corvettes will be added to the Navy fleet next year while two modern submarines by 2016 as part of its modernisation process since the government wants to extract marine resources from the Bay.
“Two modern submarines will be added to the force by 2016 and the process to this end at the final stage, while two avant-garde Corvettes, under construction in China, would be added to the Navy next year and these would further strengthen the naval fleet,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this while addressing the Winter President Parade of the direct entry officers and midshipman of the Navy at Bangladesh Naval Academy here.
Mentioning the high prospects of having oil and natural gas in the Bay of Bengal, she said steps have been taken to extract oil and gas resources which could play a very important role in strengthening the country’s economy.
About the Navy’s shipbuilding capacity, Sheikh Hasina said Navy members are constructing warships at Khulna Ship Yard and Narayanganj Dock Yard making the country self-dependent in shipbuilding.
The Prime Minister said the government has undertaken massive short-, medium- and long-term programmes under Forces Goal Goal-2030 to develop the Navy as an effective three dimensional force. “Bangladesh Navy has entered a new era as her government has already provided two modern helicopters and two maritime patrol aircraft to the force alongside adding 16 new ships.”
Talking about Maritime boundary cases against India and Myanmar, Hasina said her government has been able to establish Bangladesh’s sovereign rights in the huge one lakh 18 thousand 813 square kilometer
sea areas settling the cases peacefully through international courts.
The Prime Minister expressed her firm belief that the new officers of the Navy would be able to place Bangladesh in a more prestigious position at the global stage by dedicating themselves to serve the nation.
She called upon the newly commissioned officers of the Navy never do anything that could damage the dignity and tradition of the Naval Force. “You’ll be the future helmsmen of the traditional Navy. You must place the interest of the Navy and the country above personal ones. You should never ever do anything that could damage the dignity and tradition of the Naval Force.”
A total of 73 officers, including 13 directly recruited officers and 60 midshipmen, were commissioned yesterday.
Acting sub-lieutenant Farzana Jesmin secured the ‘Shahid Moazzem Padak’ for her outstanding result while midshipman KM Morshed Al Asef got the ‘Sword of Honour’ for his all-round performance during the course.
Midshipman M Rakibul Hasan awarded with ‘Osmani Gold Medal’ for securing the highest quality in professional and educational subjects while Midshipman Mosammat Fatema Akter Roaida got the ‘Naval chief gold Medal’. Earlier, the Prime Minister attended the President Parade and took salute of the officers.
The Prime Minister inspected the parade riding an open Jeep. Earlier, on her arrival at the Naval Academy, the Prime Minister was received by Navy Chief Vice Admiral M Farid Habib and Commandant of BNA Commodore Nazmul Hassan.
