Govt vows to attract foreign tourists: Minister

Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Rashed Khan Menon said the govt aims to increase foreign tourist arrivals by 100 percent from 70 percent by 2016 by undertaking a series of promotional activities starting October next.
“We will mark 2016 as Tourism Year in a bid to help boost Bangladesh’s tourism sector,” Menon said.
He disclosed this while inaugurating newly-built 12-storied Motel Saikat, of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation at a cost of 46 crore at city’s Station Road area on Tuesday evening. Speaking at the function, Menon said Bangladesh has immense potentials in attracting travelers, due to its rich cultural heritage and famous tourist spots, such as Cox’s Bazar and the Sundarbans. Menon said his ministry will focus on health and religious tourism as the country has several religious sites for Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists.”The number of tourists will obviously increase if we can develop such sites,” he added.
As part of the promotional campaign, the government will be hold a regional tourism conference in October in Bangladesh, inviting participants from different countries, such as India, Cambodia, Malaysia, Nepal and Bhutan, said Menon.He said his ministry has already sought the opinions of all stakeholders to develop tourism products.He also stressed the need to develop domestic tourism for higher economic growth.”Growth of domestic tourism has a multiplier effect on the economy as it benefits different sectors such hotels, airlines and small businesses”, he added.
Tanvir Enam MP, Mohammad Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, MP, Begum Sabiha Nahar, MP, Chairman of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Aporup Chowdhury, Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary S M Golam Faruk, among others, addressed the inaugural function.
