BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir accused the government of violating all kinds of human rights.
He made the remarks at the BNP central office at Nayapalton on Tuesday after failing to bring out a procession to observe World Human Rights Day.
Fakhrul said, “Human rights violation has become prevalent everywhere in the country, and the government is doing this only to stay in power.”
“Bangladesh never witnessed such incidents of human rights violation like enforced disappearance, extrajudicial killing and repression on dissidents which have been happening for the last 10 years. The government is violating all types of human rights just to cling to power,” he said.
The BNP leader said, “We programmed to bring out a rally on the occasion of World Human Rights Day. But, police told us not to leave the party office.”
“The rallies to voice for human rights are supposed to be held regardless of party politics,” he affirmed.
The party’s Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, “Administration is not permitting us to hold, even a peaceful rally for human rights.”
Meanwhile, law enforcers beefed up surveillance in front of the BNP headquarters from Tuesday morning. Assistant Deputy Commissioner (Motijheel Zone) Enamul Haque Mithu of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said, BNP had no permission to hold rallies or to bring out processions and that is why police did not allow them to bring out a procession.
Fakhrul said, “Interest of minorities was reserved during BNP tenure. Rather, it has been violated unprecedentedly during the incumbent regime.” He claimed that the government has not raised its voice against Myanmar for violating the human rights of Rohingyas as it itself is violating human rights in its own territory.”
“Happily, the Gambia has filed a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Myanmar of human rights violation,” Fakhrul said.
Fakhrul demanded the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and reformation of election commission to hold a fair general election.
He strongly condemned the Indian lawmakers’ comments in the parliament that minorities were tortured during the BNP government and Bangladeshi Muslims entered India illegally during that time.
