Private sector importers of medicines said that the Covid-19 vaccines should be opened for importing and selling in order to fulfil 100 percent immunisation in the country.
Experts from human health sector and pharmaceutical businessmen are saying there are enormous scopes to import Covid-19 vaccines by private management to help the nation by quick inoculation programme.
But the medicine companies are yet to get a green signal from the government to import the jabs under private management.
Meanwhile, Beximco pharmaceuticals Ltd is the lone company which got government approval to import the vaccine beyond the public management.
Experts said that about 20 per cent people of the country will be going out from the government’s vaccination
programme as it has planned to immunise 80 per cent people of 18 crore population of the country.
Besides, the planned vaccination will be a time consuming matter as it is depending on supply of the vaccines.
In these circumstances, many people who are working in the frontline in corporate houses and who have ability to buy vaccine dozes, are insisting on the government to open the door for all medicine importer so that it can be available markets in the country.
When contacted, S M Shafiuzzaman, Secretary General of Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries, told The New Nation on Friday, “There is no green signal yet from the government to the medicine businessmen to import and sell Covid-19 jabs under private management.”
He said without a government decision and policy, private companies cannot take risks of importing the precious jabs.
The businessmen urged the government to allow them to import vaccines in private sector helping the nation to be fully vaccinated.
Rabbur Reza, the Chief Operating Officer of Beximco pharmaceuticals ltd said, they have to import about 30 lakh dozes of the vaccines from India’s Serum Institute under private management.
He said that they are paying eight dollars per doze of the vaccine as import price. As per their initial costing, the price of the vaccine is to be about Tk 1200 per doze.
The Beximco official said also that they have to fix a price of the jab for selling in local market as per the government’s vaccine importing policy.
Earlier, Salman F Rahman, the Vice-President of the Beximco Group and Prime Minister’s Adviser told journalists that they are going to import the jabs to help vaccination among the private sector frontliners moving the wheels of the country’s economy.
He said also that many among the people are capable to buy the vaccine and do not want to wait for months for getting a jab. The private managed vaccines will help them to be immunised soon.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) said ensuring the reasonable price, the government should open vaccine importing for non-government ways to boost the chances by 100 per cent vaccination among the eligible people of the country.
He said the scope of unabated profit through immunization should be tackled by proper monitoring.
