UNB, Dhaka :
Speakers at a view-exchange meeting here on Saturday demanded the government refrain from lowering the minimum age of marriage for girls to 16 from 18.
Terming the draft Child Marriage Restraint Act 2014 a new obstacle to women advancement, they urged the government not to change the minimum
marriage age of 18 for girls. The speakers came up with the demand at the programme organised by Samajtantrik Mohila Forum at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
Noted educationist and columnist Syed Abul Moksud, Prof Amena Mohsin, journalist Abu Syeed Khan and AN Rasheda, among others, took part in the programme held with Rowshan Ara Rusho, president of Samajtantrik Mohila Forum in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion, Abul Moksud said, “In the name of amending the Child Marriage Restraint Act, the government is doing a mockery by fixing the minimum marriage age of girls at 16.”
Terming it the worst example of the spoiled politics, he said it will have a long-lasting bad impact on society.
Prof Amena Mohsin said the mainstream political parties are not vocal against the proposed law as it is a popular decision.
Abu Syeed Khan said lowering the minimum age for marriage of girls is a great threat to women advancement and liberty, and urged government to shelve the draft law.
The speakers also urged both men and women to come forward together against the decision.
