The BNP on Friday accused the government of trying to quickly dispose of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s appeal against her conviction to hold next national polls keeping her in jail.
“We are trying hard through movements to bring our party chief out of jail. Many of our party men have been imprisoned for those efforts. But we could not free her. It is our failure as well. On the other hand, it proved the cruel appearance of the government. They are trying to dispose quickly our leader’s appeal against her conviction on the graft case to hold next national polls keeping her in jail,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a programme at the party’s Dhaka South City Unit office at Naya Paltan.
“There is no instance of giving direction by the Supreme Court to settle any appeal within three to four months. It is totally unprecedented instance, but possible under this government,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader said it in a cover unveiling programme of a musical CD of a song on Khaleda Zia written by the party’s Joint-Secretary General and Dhaka South City Unit President
Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel.
Mirza Fakhrul said, the government is intentionally trying to take the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case to the final stage rapidly.
“It is totally unfortunate that the highest court is giving such an order. Everyone considers the judiciary as the last resort for the repressed people, but the government is now trying to use if for political gain,” he said.
He said Khaleda cannot walk out of jail despite having a bail from the Supreme Court, as she is the main opponent of the government.
He alleged that there were widespread riggings of votes in the recent Khulna City Corporation polls.
He asked the party men for taking preparation to free democracy from this government. He also vowed to foil government’s efforts to hold another 5 January like election.
Singer Monir Khan, Movie Actor Uzzal, BNP Chairperson’s Press wing member Shamsuddin Dider and Sechchhasebak Dal leader Aktaruzzaman Bachhchhu, among others, were present in the programme.
