The BNP on Wednesday alleged that the government’s key purpose is to conduct the next general election keeping the party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in jail.
“The government is making conspiracy for holding the next polls in December keeping our party Chief Begum Khaleda Zia in jail staying her bail order,” complained BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan.
He said, “The government is creating obstacles by making delay of Khaleda Zia’s bail and release from jail so that they can keep Khaleda away from politics and confine her into jail until the next parliament election.”
He also said though she secured bail in the main case, the government moved for staying her bail after High Court had granted bail in ordinary cases.
Khaleda was sentenced five years in jail in a graft case by a special court on February 8 and was sent to erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail in
Nazimuddin Road in the capital.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also accused the police of creating obstacles in distributing foods among the poor people in the city on the occasion of 37th death anniversary of the late President Ziaur Rahman.
BNP Standing Committee Members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Vice-Chairman Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain and Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, were present on the occasion.
