Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday accused the government of trying to keep Begum Khaleda Zia in jail for long.
“It was possible to grant bail to Khaleda Zia on February 25. But the government hindered the court to send papers to the HC in time. It is now heard that it may take 15 days to dispatch papers. It is clear the government wants to debar her from polls and politics,” Mirza Fakhrul told a group of journalists at Nayapaltan Party Office.
The BNP Secretary General said also that some media houses reported that prominent lawyer Dr. Kamal Hossain refused to become Khaleda Zia’s lawyer. This is wrong. He said, “Dr. Kamal Hossain has listened us attentively. He said that he would give necessary advices after studying the verdict of the case. We have given him a copy thereof.”
Replying to a query, Mirza Fakhrul said that his party had urged the election commission to take necessary steps to stop Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advance election campaigns when the BNP chief is jailed in false case.
“The PM is engaged in election campaign. On the other hand, the BNP chief is in jail in a false case. We have urged the EC to stop the PM’s campaign. If they fail, it will be proved that they are favouring the government,” Fakhrul said.
BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, central leader Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny, Belal Ahmed and Aminul Islam among others, were present.
BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan said that the party might not go to polls without Khaleda Zia.
“It may not be possible that the BNP will participate in next polls keeping its chief in jail. The party must remain united in every situation,” he said while addressing a discussion meeting in Jatiya Press Club organized by Democratic Movement.
Shahadat Hossain Selim, the President of the organization presided over the programme. BNP central leader Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny, Abu Naser Muhammad Rahmatullah and others, were present.
