UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Wednesday alleged that the government is conspiring to keep their top leaders away from future polls by punishing them in ‘false cases’.
“People want to see in power a representative government elected with their votes. But, this government fears to face a competitive election. The government is conspiring to hold another January-5 like election by keeping its main opponents out of the race,” he said.
Speaking at a doa mahfil, Nazrul Islam remined the government that mere big leaders are not necessary to win any polls. The BNP leader also alleged that their party vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka has been punished in a graft case depriving him of his right to self-defence.
Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, BNP’s labour wing, organised the programme at the party’s Nayapaltan central office seeking early recovery of Khaleda Zia, now in London for eye treatment.
Earlier on Tuesday, a Dhaka court sentenced Sadeque Hossain Khoka to 13 years’ imprisonment in a case for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information about that. The BNP senior leader, now in the USA, was tried in absentia.
Nazrul Islam said, Khoka has been undergoing treatment in the USA with an order of the apex court. “Why it had been so necessary to punish him without giving him any chance to exercise his right to self-defence. So, there’s certainly a conspiracy behind this.”
The BNP leader also criticised the ruling party leaders for what he said carrying out a false propaganda over the return of their party chief from London.
