State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki on Friday said Bangladesh will not be able to become a developed country keeping half of its population – women-unskilled.
“About 2 crore unskilled women are currently confined to houses in Bangladesh,” she said speaking as chief guest at a function at Cox’s Bazar Cultural Academy auditorium to distribute cash among trained women to develop female entrepreneurs under a project of Jatiya Mahila Sangstha.
Under the project, women are trained on fashion designing, rearing bees, cultivating mushroom, catering and business management. Presided over by Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner M Ali Hossain, the function was also attended by Department of Women Affairs Director General and Additional Secretary Shahin Ahmed Chowdhury and Jatiya Mahila Sangstha Executive Director and Additional Secretary Jahanara Parvin, among others.
The state minister urged the women not marry off their daughters before 18-year and said child marriage leads to the birth of disabled babies.
She said two lakh women would be given long-term training under Income Generating Activity (IGA) project across the country to enable them to earn money staying at home.
Bangladesh will not turn into a developed country unless women come forward economically, she added.
