Colonel Jahid Faruk Shamim (rtd.), State Minister for Water Resources and Vice-President of Barishal district AL, claimed that his ministry succeeded to reduce river erosion at Sreepur under Mehendiganj upazila of Barishal.
Answering questions of the journalists during visiting the erosion affected Sreepur area on Saturday noon, the state minister said last year we experienced severe river erosion at Ulania and Sreepur.
We tried to check that by geo bag as emergency attempt. But we failed as those bags also eroded away.
As per direction of the Prime Minister we tried to control the river by converting the depth and direction of the river current from the direction of river bank to mid river, the State Minister told.
To follow that direction we started to dredge the shoal emerged on mid river and already succeeded to control the erosion at least fifty percent, he claimed.
Now we are visiting the place to select the sites and amount of dredging and then dredging department of WDB will implement that, the state minister explained.
After completing the work we hope that it will end the sorrow of the habitant of Sreepur, the State Minister added.
During that visit Pankaj Nath, lawmaker, leaders of local AL, officials of WDB accompanied the State Minister.
