BSS, Dhaka :
The government has undertaken a number of projects to generate 20,000 megawatt (MW) electricity by using 53 per cent coal aimed at providing power to all citizens by 2021 at reasonable price.
“The Awami League-led government has achieved successes in the power sector during the past six years and power generation capacity more than doubled,” an official of power, energy and mineral resources ministry told BSS here yesterday.
He said the electricity generation capacity reached to 11,265MW from 3,268MW in 2009, with around 68 per cent of the population having access to electricity, adding, “The government has given top priority to the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall development of the country.”
According to the ministry sources, the government is expecting to generate 13,301MW power at the end of this year.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government has a target to generate 20,000MW electricity by using 53 per cent coal as primary energy within the Vision 2021, the sources said. They said the government has increased the number of power plants, transmission lines and distribution lines aimed at fostering the economic growth to become a middle income country by 2021.
Besides, the highest solar home system has been installed in the country’s remote and other places for meeting individual power demand. The seven ongoing construction power plants would go on operation for generating 2,036 megawatt (MW) electricity this year and the country to get 13,301MW electricity.
The government fixed a target to generate 20,000 megawatt (MW) electricity by using 53 per cent coal as primary energy within the Vision 2021 and currently power plants have been using 41 per cent natural gas as primary energy in the power sector in the country.
The government has undertaken a coal based mega power plant project having capacity of generating 10,000MW electricity, while India’s Reliance Group proposed to invest US$ 3 billion to set up four power plants with a total generation capacity of 3,000 megawatt.
Prime Minister’s Energy Advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on Thursday told journalists that the Reliance Group would invest US$ 1.5 billion and it would be gradually raised to three billion.
According to the proposal of Reliance Group, Dr Chowdhury said, the Reliance Group offered to invest $1.5 billion initially, and through the investment, they will set up an LNG-based power plant with 750-MW capacity in the first phase.
