Government is going to sit in a crucial meeting with the heads and representatives of public universities at International Mother Language Institute under Dhaka University in the city today [Saturday].
The Vice-Chancellors, pro Vice-Chancellors, Presidents and General Secretaries of Teachers’ Associations, senior teachers, and President and Secretary of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Associations will attend the meeting. Home Minister Asaduzzamn Khan Kamal will address the meeting as chief guest while Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid will be in the chair. The Ministers are expected to elaborate the government’s latest stance about the issue in the meeting. In an invitation letter, the University Grant Commission [UGC] on Friday said the meeting will be held apparently to ensure proper teaching and learning atmosphere in the educational institutions. In the wake of terror attacks in Gulshan and Sholakia, the government took decision to bring all the private and public educational institutions under the scanner of intelligence agencies when several students have reportedly been joined in different Islamist terrorist outfits.
At the same time, the government also instructed the concerned security agencies to bring teachers of educational institutions under round-the-clock surveillance. Besides, the government had planned to conduct a massive awareness programme in the Bengali and English medium educational institutions across the country involving the teachers, administrative officials and guardians to give focus on negative impact of militancy. It is worth to mention that, a number of students of public universities, including Chittagong University, Rajshahi University and Islamic University, were arrested earlier by the law enforcement agencies for their alleged link with militant outfits.
Not only that, several high-profile private educational institutions, such as North South University, BRAC University, Scholastica and Turkish Hope have earned blame for nourishing the students who are allegedly involved in terrorist activities.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid had said, “The government has taken initiatives to save students from the clutches of militancy. Same types of meetings will also be held with all other educational institutions across the country accordingly. The teachers and administrative staff will also be brought under close surveillance. We’ll see what they are teaching and what their activities are.”
“If any students stay absent in the educational institution for ten days, it should be informed to his guardians. It will also be informed to the government in written. Here, the guardians will have to take responsibilities. We’ve sent notice to all educational institutions asking the heads to take it seriously,” the Minister said.
