Bangladesh government has decided to distribute free sanitary napkins among poor women and teenage girls.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Thursday announced the decision at a press conference at the Directorate General of Family Planning.
He said, “The government will distribute free sanitary napkins to the poor women and adolescent from now. They (the poor women and girls) can take this item free of cost from the family planning centres across the country.”
Menstruation is a most important part of the life of women and adolescent girls, but maintaining hygiene is crucial during the period, he added.
The Minister said that every one should be aware of the hygienic period. Unhygienic menstruation products can cause infections and even cancer, but most of the poor families ignoring it or unaware of it due to financial constraints.
A lot of women and adolescent girls in our country have no access to safe sanitary napkins due to poverty. In these circumstances, the government has taken such decision to distribute the item amongst all women and girls at free of cost.
