Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today said the government would take initiative to thwart any digital fraudulence as part of its effort to ensure consumer rights.
“Following the growing popularity of e-commerce, there would be digital fraudulence.
So, the government would form a committee with experts to adopt effective measures to ensure consumer rights in digital arena,” he added.
The minister was addressing a seminar that was organized to mark the World Consumer Rights Day by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) and Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) at TCB Auditorium.
Referring to the government’s election manifesto in 2008, Tofail said Consumer Rights Protection Law has been passed in 2009 while national council to union parishad level committees have also been formed to protect consumer rights.
Due to the activities of the DNCRP, consumers’ complaints have been decreased, he added.
The minister revealed the government has collected Taka 17.72 crore as fine from 24,530 commercial firms for different irregularities.
He, however, urged the consumers to be careful to defend own rights.
Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) President Mustafa Jabbar made keynote presentation in the seminar.
