Govt to implement Tk 372cr GMDSS project

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said the government has undertaken project to implement Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) project involving Taka 372 crore.
“The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System project with Korean financing will be implemented to ensure public satellite safety and security communication by mobile satellite communication systems,” he said while addressing a press briefing at his ministry.
The minister said Bangladesh’s candidate has been elected as the Director General of the International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO) for the first time from Asia. Captain Moin Uddin Ahmed of Bangladesh, contested and won the position of Director General of IMSO, defeating Germany, France, Italy and Romania, he said.
Shajahan said that the victory to the IMSO is another appearance of international confidence under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government.
He, however, said the IMSO is an inter-governmental organisation with 99 member states and Bangladesh’s candidate defeated the Romanian candidate by 49-37 votes and Captain Moin Uddin will be the next Director General for the next four years.
The minister said Bangladesh won membership in the IMSO in 1993.
