‘Govt to dig 3,000 km canals, build 5,850 km embankments’

The government has undertaken a project for excavation and re-excavation of 3,000 km canals and constructing 5,850 km embankments across the country.
Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmood said this in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday while replying to a question from treasury bench member AKM Shahjahan Kamal.
He said the Water Resources Ministry has prepared a project titled ‘Rehabilitation of Embankments and Re-excavation of Rivers/Canals’ and sent it to the Planning Ministry for approval.
Besides, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved a project (1st phase) involving Taka 198.02 crore to save Ramgati and Kamalnagar upazilas under Lakkhipur district from erosion by the Meghna River, Anisul added.
Replying to another question from Advocate Navana Akter, the minister said the government is implementing a project under Climate Change Trust Fund to excavate and re-excavation of canals at Damuddya, Gosiarhat, Shariatpur Sadar and Noria upazilas in Shariatpur district. Ninety six percent work on the project has already been completed, he added.
He said a proposal for ‘Sureshwar Flood Control, Draining out and Irrigation Project” costing Taka 171.11 crore under Shariatpur district has been sent to the planning ministry.
