Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam BSc on Sunday said the government is setting up 50 technical training centres in 50 upazilas to improve the standard of migration process.
“This will develop at least 5 lakh skilled manpower annually in the country,” he said while speaking as chief guest at a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city on the occasion of International Migrants Day-2016.
International Migrants Day is being observed in the country today like elsewhere in the world.
On December 4 in 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed December 18 as the International Migrants Day.
Marking the day, 1,076 students were given stipends amounting to a total of Taka 1.5 crore in four categories.
Presided over by Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Begum Shamsun Nahar, the function was also addressed by State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, Wage Earners Welfare Board Director General Gazi Muhammad Julhash and Director General of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training M Selim Reza.
Two migrant workers-Fatema Bibi of Savar and Milon Khan of Tongi- also spoke on the occasion.
In the function, 12 CIPs of the year 2015 were given citations.
Of them, Mohammad Mahtabur Rahman of Sylhet and Mohammad Selim of Chittagong addressed the function.
Nurul Islam BSc said the government is communicating with the countries concerned to improve the quality of manpower training to the recognized level.
Steps have been taken so that workers can go abroad free of cost or on loans, he added.
State Minister Shahriar Alam said the government has enacted a law for the welfare of the migrants.
