Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder on Tuesday said that since food producers and traders have to work under 18 different agencies now, it creates various complexities. Therefore, a process has been started to bring food traders under a single umbrella body.
The minister made the remarks while speaking at a seminar on “Safe Food for a Better Economy” on the occasion of World Safe Food Day 2022 at a hotel in Dhaka.
“Difference of opinion remains between the agencies of the agribusiness industry and the Ministry of Food on the various issues of the food traders. Therefore, the issue of who will oversee this has been raised in the cabinet. The cabinet will decide whose job it is,” the minister said.
Food Secretary Dr Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum presided over the seminar. Also present were Bangladesh Bank former governor Farashuddin, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Giashuddin Miah, FAO Country Representative Robert Simpson, heads of food-related organisations, FAO representatives and business representatives.
