Govt to bring 1.29 cr people in mainstream of economy

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Thursday said the government is adamant to bring 1.29 crore people into the mainstream of the economy as per the 7th Five Year Plan.
“It is a difficult task to create jobs for this huge number of people but the government adamant to do it for maintaining the pace of development,” he said while speaking at a seminar on social safety and labour sector at the Planning Commission conference room here.
Member of general economic division of the Planning Commission Dr Shamsul Arefin presented the keynote paper. Social welfare ministry secretary Zillar Rahman, World Bank’s country director Qimiao Fan, PPRC’s executive chairman Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman and research director of BIDS Dr Rushidan Islam Rahman, among others, spoke at the seminar.
Mustafa Kamal said the government has intensified the social safety net programmes because the prime aim of it is to make the life of the people safe and secure.
Mentioning the allowance for senior citizens, allowance for divorced women, VGF, TR, Kabikha and allowance for freedom fighters, he said the government is taking up new programmes for the extreme poor to make the country free from poverty by-2030.
He said under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the government has been able to bring down the rate of inflation to 5 percent from 9 percent. Inflation did not go up even after a 100 percent rise in the pays of the public officials-employees, he added.
