The government is set to allocate Tk 400 crore in the upcoming fiscal year to run humanitarian programme including cash support to the flood-ravaged Haor people of seven districts for the next one year, sources said.
An official of Finance Division said, we have no problem to allocate the money for the people who are badly affected by the recent flash flood in Haor areas.
Comparing to funding the state banks which ultimately brings no positive outcome to the government, it is much effective to allocate money for such people in need, he said.
The funds is never recovered from the government banks, the official stated.
Rather, after overcoming the disaster, the Haor people would contribute to the national economy using the funds in agriculture, boosting the Gross Domestic Product, he observed.
The government on April 23 announced that some 335,000 families of the Haor region would get 30kg rice and Tk500 as monthly relief under a 100-day scheme.
Apart from rice and cash, some 171,715 families will get relief materials through the Vulnerable Group Feeding(VGF) programme and OMS.
Disaster Management and Relief Ministry has been disbursing Tk 49.50cr as cash support from a Tk 100-crore special allocation of the current FY.
The ministry has already submitted another Tk 165 crore proposal to provide Tk 1,000 and food supplies a month to 0.55 million people also under the VGF programme from August to October.
Mentionable, before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Sunamganj on April 30, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya told the media that the premier would double the cash support to Tk1,000, but that did not happen.
Lately, the Ministry forwarded yet another proposal seeking Tk 360 crore to continue the humanitarian programme for 1 million affected people in the region from November to June.
Meanwhile, despite the government relief campaign, the allocated amount of rice and cash is not sufficient, alleged the victims. Tapan Barmon, a resident of Khalapara under Modhu Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamaganj, said: I have been contacting the authorities concerned for the relief for last seven days, but in vain.
Abdul Khaled, who lives in Sunamaganj Sadar Upazila, fears that the people living the remote parts of the Haor region would not get the relief supplies due to shortfall in allocation.
