The government has targeted meeting at least 30.0 percent of the country’s power demand from coal-based plants by 2030.
“The target of meeting 30.0 percent of the total power demand from coal-
based plants by 2030 has been set in line with the Power System Master Plan 2016″, State Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told BSS.
He said producing electricity from coal would also help keep power tariff at an affordable level because coal is cheaper than other available sources of power generation.
The state minister said the target of producing more power from coal would be met in phases, with setting up of 22 coal-fired power plants in the next four years.
“We expect that construction work of the 22 power plants would begin in 2019,” Nasrul said explaining that out of the 22 plants, seven would be built by government, seven by private sector and the rest eight in joint venture.
