Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Thursday said the government has taken steps to keep the value of US dollar stable against Taka so that the prices of imported commodities could not rise during Ramadan.
“Ramadan is ahead . . . many essential commodities are being imported and if the value of dollar goes up the prices of such commodities will be increased,” said Tofail Ahmed while talking to journalists after a meeting with Viet Nam Ambassador in the city Tran Van Khoa at his secretariat office.
He hoped that the value of dollar will become normal soon. The commerce minister said the government has taken all measures to protect the right of consumers.
“We’ve taken all measures so that none can create any unusual situation ahead of Ramadan,” he added.
The country has surplus stock of commodities such as chickpeas, pulses, sugar and oil at present, he said, adding that the commerce ministry has taken steps to supply essential commodities to market at fair price.
“During Ramadan essential commodities will be sold through dealers across the country and there will be ‘truck-sale’ system in the cities like previous years,” said the commerce minister.
About his meeting with Viet Nam’s ambassador, Tofail Ahmed said the meeting of joint economic commission of Bangladesh-Viet Nam will be held in Viet Nam this year and a delegation headed by the commerce minister will take part in it.
Tofail said he urged the entrepreneurs of Viet Nam to invest in Bangladesh as the government is offering special incentives for foreign investors. Bangladesh has also huge skilled manpower, he added.
