Green activists have urged the government for immediate steps to check water pollution, recover water-bodies and ensure safe water for all. They said poor water management, unchecked water pollution and supply of unsafe water by Dhaka WASA are threatening public health.
They expressed the concern at a human chain programme organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolan (Poba) in front of the Fine Arts Institute of Dhaka University on Saturday.
Poba general secretary Engr Abdus Sobhan, its joint-general secretary Aslam Khan, rights activist Hafizur Rahman Moyna, Poba coordinator Atiq Murshed, Green Mind Society president Amir Hasan, Poba joint secretary Lenin Chowdhury, and environmental activist Burhan Uddin Ahmed, among others, spoke at the human chain programme. A set of recommendations was put forward from the human chain programme to check water pollution in the country. The recommendations include checking industrial pollution and use of pesticide in agriculture, reducing use of surface water, building small townships across the country to minimise pressure on cities and ensuring a sustainable sewerage management system.
