BNP vice chairman Khandaker Mahbub Hossain on Saturday warned the government that its current stance on the Supreme Court’s 16th amendment verdict will lead to a chaotic situation in the country.
Speaking at a discussion, he also said the country’s people will come up with a strong resistance if any attack is made on the judiciary.
“You (govt) have already destroyed all the institutions through
politicisation. You please don’t interfere in the judiciary. You please exercise restraint stopping indecent comments on it. An anarchic situation will be created in the country, if people lose their confidence in the apex court for your activities. You’ll be held responsible for it if it happens,” the BNP leader said.
Amar Desh Family arranged the programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) demanding the government open all the closed media outlets, including the vernacular Daily Amar Desh.
Mahbub, also an ex-Supreme Court Bar Association president, said the ruling party leaders are busy commenting on the 16th amendment verdict though people are in serious miseries in the flood-affected areas of the country. “The ruling party leaders have got unnerved as the verdict has exposed their failures, misdeeds and corruption.”
The BNP leader said, the ruling party leaders have got so much desperate that they are now trying to use the Anti-Corruption Commission to put the Chief Justice in trouble.
He warned that people will not sit idly if the government attacks the judiciary, the last resort of getting justice. “Propel will put up a strong resistance against any such move.”
The senior lawyer called upon people from all walks of life to get united to restore democracy and freedom of expression by ousting the current ‘fascist and autocratic’ regime.
“Let’s take to the streets with courage as the government’s condition is very vulnerable. If we can give a strong push, the ruling party leaders will flee the country quitting power,” the BNP leader observed.
Criticising the government for shutting down the Daily Amar Desh, Mahbub said it is Awami League’s old habit to close media as it had banned all the newspapers, except four ones, in 1975 by establishing the one-party rule.
Speaking at the programme, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury called upon the political parties to reach an understanding over the restoration of democracy and people’s rights and hold the next election in a credible manner.
“I want to urge Dr Kamal Hossain and B Chowdhury to hold discussions with all parties. Giving a sudden joint statement won’t yield any positive outcome. Please sit with all and make united efforts for a qualitative change,” he advised.
Zafrullah also called upon BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and other parties to ensure democracy within their parties to make the movement for the restoration of democracy.
Referring to the jailing of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman in a contempt of court cases, he questioned why the apex court judges remain silent over ruling party leaders’ current remarks as they are regularly making unguarded comments about the judiciary and the Chief Justice. “Don’t the judges get hurt with ruling party leaders’ comments? Why are you afraid of taking action?”
He hoped that if the apex court does not take any action against the ruling party leaders for their contemptuous remarks, Chief Justice SK Sinha will tender apology to Mahmudur Rahman for convicting him for the same offence.
