Nearly 43 lakh people, including destitute, underprivileged, widows, divorced women and elderly poor, have been brought under the government’s old-age and other social safety net allowances for integrating the beneficiaries into the mainstream of society through improving their livelihoods.
“Every year the number of beneficiaries of the safety net programmes is increasing in the country,” an official familiar with the process told BSS on Thursday.
He said a total of 31.50 lakh elderly people aged 65 years and above are receiving the old-age allowance and some 11.50 lakh distressed women are getting widow allowance.
According to a ministry official, the government has been operating two separate programmes for the downtrodden section of the people especially the transgender, dalits (humiliated persons) and gypsy community to improve their livelihoods and life standard.
The government is carrying out its safety net campaign across the country through providing old-age allowance, widow allowance, allowance for divorced women, disabled allowance, distressed women allowance, poor pregnant women allowance, subsidised open market sale, vulnerable group development (VGD), vulnerable group feeding (VGF), test relief (TR) and food for work programme, he said.
“The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has underlined the importance of an intense monitoring of the social safety net programmes and other initiatives taken for improving the socio-economic condition of the extreme poor, destitute, widows and disable persons,” the official said.
In line with the government’s initiatives, various projects under the social safety net have been undertaken to improve the lifestyle of the old-aged, distressed, disabled, financially insolvent people, widows, divorced and pregnant women.
The official said since 2009 the present government has been implementing various innovative programmes for alleviating poverty and ensuring improvement of the lifestyle of the underprivileged.
The extreme poor families are getting direct benefits of the realistic steps.
“Poverty in Bangladesh has drastically reduced as a result of an inclusive growth strategy adopted under the bold and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
Generally, economic growth in any developing country creates inequality. It is a great challenge for any emerging economy to bring the backward section of the population under the fold of the mainstream economic activities,” the official added.
