Govt running country upholding constitutional processes: President

President Abdul Hamid on Monday said the government is running the country with a view to overcoming the
challenges of maintaining the progress of democracy upholding the constitutional processes.
“The present government has undertaken all-out initiatives to ensure transparency and accountability; remain respectful to human rights and the rule of law, taken prompt decisions for resolving problems and implemented those and materialise the nation’s dreams of and hope for advancement towards growth,” he said while addressing the New Year’s first session of the 10th Parliament.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presided over the session that began at 4.15 pm. Leader of the House Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Raushon Ershad were present during the President’s speech.
Functioning within a democratic structure, the President said, the present government has undertaken all-out initiatives to ensure transparency and accountability, remain respectful to human rights and the rule of law, took prompt decision for resolving problems and implemented those and materialise the nation’s dream of and
hope for advancement towards growth. “The government is making relentless efforts to establish good governance in the country attaching utmost importance to development of democracy, consolidation of rule of law, maintenance of social peace and achievements of economic growth,” he told the House.
The present government assumed responsibility amid political unrest, arson, vandalism, assault and killings launched by some political parties in the name of movement,” said Hamid adding, “Bangladesh is known to the world as ‘a state of emerging economy’ due to efficient management of the government.”
The President urged all concerned to play an effective role in Jatiya Sangsad as it is the platform of materialising people’s aspirations.
“The great Jatiya Sangsad is the center point of all activities of the country. I call upon all, irrespective of the treasury bench and the opposition, to play a constructive and an effective role in Jatiya Sangsad-the institution of materialising the aspirations of people,” he said.
In his 74-minute speech, the President highlighted the present government’s activities and successes in different areas, including economy, trade and commerce, agriculture, power, foreign relations, tourism, education, health, good governance and women and child development.
