BSS, Dhaka :
Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu yesterday said that the government rejected the draft regarding the Press Council Act and sent it back to the Press Council for redrafting.
The minister, in response to a question, said that they (the government) would decide on it after thorough discussions with all stakeholders.
He was talking to BSS at his residence about the Press Council Act that was being discussed in the print media.
Asked about the government’s reason for thinking of a new Act, he said that it was the demand of those concerned that forced the
government to think about it.
Responding to a question about the issue, he said, the Press Council has been formed to protect citizens from the abuse of the press, if any.
The minister reiterated that the government, which had introduced the Right to Information (RTI) Act, would act in the same vein to ensure a vibrant press.
Earlier, he explained that updating of laws was a continuous process for any government in a developing country.
