About one crore people in Haor areas have been passing bad days as they have lost their crops, vegetables, fishes, domestic animals and other necessaries during the recent devastating flash flood which caused loss worth Tk 5 thousand crore in Kishoregnaj, Netrokhona, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Molobi Bazar and B’ Baria in Haor districts while the Government estimated Tk 805 cr loss . Some 1.35 lakh farmers have been affected in Kishoreganj . They are now scrambling for food, livestock, feed, medicines and relief materials to overcome the worst situation.
Disaster Management Relief Ministry Additional Secretary Subratha Shaha told The New Nation on Saturday the government is providing necessary support to the flood affected people in Haor areas.
The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed to continue the distribution of relief among the affected people till their rehabilation.
Subratha Shaha also said that, the extreme poor in haor areas will get food through VGP programmes while the flood affected ones will get food grain at taka 10 per kg.
The addistional Secretary visited Kishoreganj and Netrokhona district on Saturday.
He was addressing a District Disaster Management Committee meeting at Kishoreganj Circuit House on Saturday morning with Deputy Commissioner Md. Azimuddin Biswas in the chair.
DRO Md. Siddiqur Rahman, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Md. Shafiqul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr. Habibur Rahman were also present.
Days of heavy rainfall and onrush of water from the upstream Maghalaya hills in India caused the flash flood that have damaged around 58,540 hectares of pady fields, mostly of mature Boro rice, in Mithamoin, Austogram, Itna, Nikli and Bajitpur upazilas of the district, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
Kishoreganj District Administration distributing 5 metric tones rice and cash two lakhs taka among the flood affected poor people in Itna Upazil. ADC (General) Torafder Md. Akhter Jamil was also present the distribution programme.
