UNB, Dhaka :
Garment workers leader Mantu Ghosh on Friday said the government promises so many things to the garment workers but hardly implements anything in favor of them.
He stated this at the inauguration programme of ‘6th Central Garments Workers Convention’ of Garments Sramik Trade Union Kendra held in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city.
Mantu Ghosh, also the president of Garments Sramik Trade Union Kendra, said: “The government always conveys its support to the garment workers but constantly defends the interest of the garment owners.”
Imdadul Islam, president of Rana Plaza Garments Workers Union, said it is nearly two years since the Rana Plaza tragedy, but many workers of the building are yet to get the promised compensation.
“The murderers also did not get any punishment. So, we urge the Prime Minister to ensure that the murderers of both Tazreen Fashion and Rana Plaza tragedies are punished,” he added.
The Garment Workers Convention made some demands that include the right to form trade union in every factory including at the EPZs; fair wages; halting demotion in the name of grading; 6 months maternity leave with wages; and rationing for the workers.
CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim and general secretary of Garments Sramik Trade Union Kendra Sadekur Rahman Shamim were, among others, present.
