UNB, Dhaka :
The National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas, Power-Port and Natural Resources on Tuesday alleged that the government has been giving priority to protecting the interests of the foreign multinational companies in the power and energy sector.
The leaders of the committee brought this allegation against the government while addressing a discussion meeting at thea
Child Welfare Federation Auditorium in the city. The function was organized by the Dhaka City Unit of the National Committee to drum up support for its planned long march to Rampal in Bagerhat district from capital Dhaka, on March 10-15 to protest the setting up of a coal-fired power plant there.
The site of the plant is just 14 kilometres away from the designated ‘ecologically critical area’ of the Sundarbans – the world’s largest mangrove forest and one of Bangladesh’s most cherished natural assets.
The leaders urged all to make the action programme a success through massive participation of the people.
National Committee member secretary Prof Anu Mohammad noted that the government shows no sign of pulling out of the project despite concern from the United Nations, which designates the Sundarbans as a World Heritage Site.
Terming the Rampal power project ‘suicidal’, he said the government has engaged in destructive activities to protect the interests of the foreign looters of the country’s natural wealth.
