BSS, Dhaka :
Two zoos in Dhaka and Rangpur will be further modernized at a cost of Taka 350 crore under a five-year project to make them of global standard by improving infrastructures and adding more facilities to the greater benefit of the inmates as well as the visitors.
The Department of Architecture of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) as part of the project’s implementation recently conducted a feasibility study on the prevailing condition of the two government zoos in the capital city and the northern divisional city.
Dr Maqsudul Hassan Hawlader, Deputy Curator of the Dhaka Zoo, told BSS that the implementation of Dhaka and Rangpur Zoos modernization project is expected to complete by 2017. “The project is expected to bring about a change in the present animal cage system, which would take a semi-natural shape of the forests,” he said.
Hawlader said most zoos in the world have cages with semi-natural look for better animal health and environment, but Dhaka and Rangpur zoos still lack that facility. “It is now a matter of obligation on our part to modernize zoos in Dhaka and Rangpur by providing semi-natural living accommodation along with a favourable environment for the zoo inmates,” he said. Other important aspects of the project include renovation of the sewerage system, construction of underpass, modern digital gates, multi-storied outdoor car parking area and reconstruction of the internal road and streets for the visitors.
