Alam Sarowar Tito, Kishoreganj :
To connect the northeastern waters with the mainland, the government has undertaken a project of constructing 11 km elevated road over the haor areas. The project will cost around Tk 3,500 crore.
The initiative is expected to further boost tourism in the northeastern part of the country.
This project will facilitate agricultural production and marketing by facilitating overall communication in the haor area through development of haor condition tolerant infrastructure.
The elevated road and infrastructure development project in the haor area proposed by the local Government (LG) Department will be raised at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
The project will be implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
The LGED sources said, the development project will bring Dharmapasha, Tahirpur, Bishwambharpur and Jamalganj upazilas of Sunamganj district and Barhatta upazila of Netrokona district under improved communication system.
Under the project, 10.6 km elevated roads as well as 98.6 km upazila roads and 20.28 km union roads suitable for all seasons will be constructed. Besides, 16.53 km upazila, 22.6 km union and village roads and 57 bridges and 117 culverts will be constructed.
Bangladesh University of Technology and Engineering (BUET) has examined the feasibility of the proposed elevated road.
BUET Civil Engineering. Professor Dr. Hadiuzzaman expressed hope that by 2026, the proposed elevated road will be ready for traffic.
Every year during the monsoon season, a large agricultural land is submerged and the haor areas become isolated.
Rejowan Ahmed Tofiq MP, said that even in the dry season, people face communication problems due to lack of roads, which is very unfortunate.
If the project is implemented, the development of physical infrastructure in the haor area will facilitate quick and easy transportation of goods, agricultural products and fisheries resources throughout the year. As a result, rural economic activities will accelerate.
Apart from that, at least six to seven towers will be constructed on both sides of the elevated road to give the tourists a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the vast haor.
