Staff Reporter :
The government decided to partially reduce bandwidth capacity of two leading private telecom operators of the country — Grameenphone and Robi — as the two companies did not pay the due amount that was detected in audits.
Thirty per cent bandwidth capacity of Grameenphone and 15 per cent of Robi would remain blocked until they pay their due, Bangladesh
Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) sources confirmed.
This would come into effect immediately after the concerned authorities receive the notice from the government, he said.
The BTRC would send a letter to International Internet Gateway (IIGW) to implement its decision.
Reducing the bandwidth would hamper the services provided by these companies with an increase in call drops and slow internet speed, he added.
Grameenphone has Tk 12579.95 crore as due and Robi on the other hand needs to pay the government Tk 867.24 crore.
Of the total amount, Grameenphone owes Tk 8494.01 crore to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and Tk 4085.94 crore to National Board of Revenue (NBR). Robi has due of Tk 867.23 crore to the government, including Tk 197.21 crore to the NBR alone, Zakir added.
