Staff Reporter :BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday accused the government of trying to use the militancy issue to stifle opposition parties’ leaders and activists to stay in power for years. “The militancy is harming the country’s interests and prolonging the autocratic rule of the ruling party. It is now clear to the people that the government wants to apply it to stem its opponents political parties instead of eliminating the evil forces. It is not at all helpful for he people,” he said. The BNP leader said this while talking to reporters after placing wreaths with the leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Shechchhasebak Dal at late President Ziaur Rahman’s grave, marking its 36th founding anniversary. “While the militancy is spreading across the country, the ruling party is trying to make it a weapon to cripple the opposition parties, including the BNP, politically,” Fakhrul said. The BNP leader accused the government of filing thousands of fabricated cases against the party leaders and activists and arresting them to eradicate political opponents. “Recently a minister remarked that they had no will at all to forge any unity with the BNP. The minister’s statement demonstrated nothing but determination to wipe out the BNP and democracy from Bangladesh,” Mirza Fakhrul said. The BNP secretary general also denounced the ruling party leaders’ remarks about Ziaur Rahman that he had link to the Bangabandhu murder. He told “The ruling party is manufacturing fictitious stories to defraud the people”.He said that the Awami League leaders formed the post-martial law government with those who played role in August 15 bloodbath. “If a fair investigation into the incident is held, it will be exposed who had his hands in the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.” He claimed that Ziaur Rahman had no link to the brutal killing of Bangabandhu as he did not believe in such bad politics.Asked about the party leaders’ resentment regarding its new central committee, he said it is quite natural that some party leaders might be grieved, At he same time, we should remember that it is not possible to accommodate all in the committee of a large party like the BNP.”Shechchhasebak Dal Secretary Sarfat Ali Sapu and other leaders were present on the occasion.
