UNB, Dhaka :
Branding the government as politically bankrupt and isolated from people, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said just one more push is required to ensure its fall.
Addressing a discussion, he called upon people from all walks of life to get united and take all-out preparations for a vigorous movement.
“The government has lost earth beneath its feet as it has become politically bankrupt after getting isolated from people. Now only one push is enough to pull this illegal regime down,” the BNP leader said.
Kalyan Party organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking its 7th founding anniversary.
Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, said they are on a movement aiming to
establish a government of people by toppling the current ‘fascist autocratic and usurper regime through holding a fresh inclusive election under a non-party administration. Accusing the government of establishing a reign of terror across the country, he alleged that a suffocating situation has been created in the country as the regime has resorted to repressive acts, killings, enforced disappearances and filing of false cases against opposition leaders and activists.
The BNP acting secretary alleged that the government is trying to promptly accomplish the trial proceedings on the ‘false graft’ cases filed against their party chairperson Khaleda Zia in a bid to unduly punish her.
Claiming that the government like other state organs has politicised the judiciary, Fakhrul said the opposition leaders and activists are not getting bails from the lower courts. “The lower court judges act at the behest of the government high-ups. We have also become frustrated when we go to the apex court for justice. The government has passed an impeachment law to control the Supreme Court judges. So, the judiciary can’t work independently.”
Describing the current parliament as unrepresentative, he said Awami League has turned it into a rubber stamp. “It has established a one-party rule through a farcical election. The country is now on the brink of ruination and democracy is at stake due to the misrule and arrogance of the illegal government.”
Referring to TI reports that Bangladesh ranked 14th from the bottom in its Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2014, the BNP leader said the report has exposed how the ruling party men are indulging in corruption.
He regretted that when the corruption is alarmingly increasing, the Anti Corruption Commission is giving the ‘corrupt’ Awami League leaders impunity. “Now this commission has become an indemnity commission and working as a government team.”
Hitting out at Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam for calling US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal a minister of little worth and US Ambassador in Dhaka Dan W Mozena a housemaid ‘Mozina’, Fakhrul said it has dented the country’s ties with America.
He also said the current ‘illegal’ government has no friend both at home and abroad which is causing havoc on the economy and manpower export.
