UNB, Dhaka :
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday accused the government of trying to cerate a rift in BNP and said such ‘plot’ will simply fall flat.
“The government had conspired to create a rift in our party and alliance before the January-5 polls, but failed. It’s now again trying to split our party, but their evil design won’t be successful this time, too and won’t be able to take any one from our party,” he told a discussion.
Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder Smrity Sangsad organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 15th death anniversary of the party’s ex-secretary general.
Salam Talukder’s wife Mahmuda Salam was also present.
Fakhrul urged the government to accept their demand for arranging a fresh national election under a non-party administration. “You (govt) won’t be able to cling to power by resorting to repressive acts and trying to resist our movement. Our movement will gradually be intensified.”
He also warned his party leaders and activists that those who will betray with the party and the movement, people will not forgive them and put them on trial one day.
Fakhrul came down hard on Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraf for his comment that he often discusses political issues with BNP acting secretary general and claimed that the ruling party spokesman’ s statement is ‘totally baseless’.
He also claimed he did not have any conversation with Asharf after the January-5 election. “I’d an impression that the Awami League general secretary was a gentleman who doesn’t lie. But his recent comments involving me are absolutely false.”
The BNP spokesman also slammed senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta and claimed that he is also trying to divide the BNP leaders and activists by making misleading remarks.
He also alleged that the government in a planned way is moving ahead to re-establish one-party rule. “The adoption of broadcast policy and the decision to restore parliament’s power to impeach judges are part of such move of the government.”
BNP standing committee member Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, among others, addressed the programme held with Prof Imajuddin in the chair.
