UNB, Dhaka :BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday accused the government of plotting to make BNP leaderless by sending its leaders to jail one after another in ‘false’ cases.Denouncing such an alleged move in a statement, the BNP chief claimed that a suffocating situation has been created in the country due to what she said the government’s criminal activities and fascist and undemocratic attitude.”We’ve repeatedly and equivocally said BNP never did the politics of terrorism and pampered terrorists. It’s known to all that BNP had called for waging a democratic movement in a peaceful manner to protect the besieged democracy,” she stated.Khaleda alleged that the government’s agents and the ruling party cadres carried out terror incidents during the movement as part of their evil efforts to shift the blame on the opposition.Defending her accusation, the BNP chief said different media had also reported the involvement of the ruling party men in the subversive acts during the movement.”But, the government is conspiring to assassinate the characters of the leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies and relentlessly harassing them implicating them in false cases,” she observed.Mentioning that the current regime is in no way an elected government, Khaleda said it is a matter of regret that the government has forgottenthat people are the main source of power as they have got desperate to materialise their dream of staying in office for five years.”This government knows it very well that the vast majority of people are not with them. So, they’ve got desperate and chosen repressive policy to cement their unethical power. I want to make the government remembered that no fascist regime could perpetuate its power resorting to suppressive acts,” she said.Khaleda demanded the government immediately release her party’s standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, vice chairman Abdus Salam Pintu, her adviser MA Mannan, party joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman, Mizanur Rahman Minu, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and other arrested leaders of BNP and its associate bodies. She also called upon the government not to obstruct opposition’s political programmes, shun repressive acts and show respect for human rights to ensure democratic practice in the country.
