Govt out to divide people: BNP

UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Wednesday alleged that the government is trying to divide the democracy-loving people through a well-crafted plot to make its political gain.
“A conspiracy is on to create a division among people. The government is trying to divide the patriotic and democracy-loving people in a planned way for its own benefits…we must thwart it,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He came up with the allegation while speaking at a discussion arranged by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s 11th ‘imprisonment day’. About the next general election, the BNP leader said their chairperson has already said there will be no election in the country without a non-party neutral administration. “The election must be held under a non-party neutral election-time government and neutral Election Commission.”
He said their party wants to restore democracy in the country by establishing a pro-people government through uniting the nation. “Let’s install a pro-people government defeating Awami League through a united movement.” The BNP secretary general also called upon the Chhatra Dal leader and activists to come forward with a fresh vigour to oust the current ‘autocratic’ regime. BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said their party will join the next polls under its chairperson Khaleda Zia’s leadership by establishing an election-time neutral government. He urged BNP leaders and activists not to get confused with ruling party leaders’ remarks that their party’s registration with the Election Commission will be cancelled if it boycotts the next polls. “We must join the polls under a neutral administration and form the next government with two-thirds majority.” Mosharraf also alleged that the government is carrying out a propaganda that BNP is coming to a negotiation with it to join the next polls with an assurance of getting 70-80 seats.
“The government had conducted a false campaign before the January-5 election in 2014 that a group of BNP leaders would join the polls leaving Khaleda Zia. In practice, no BNP grassroots activist, let alone any leader, participated in the polls. So, it’ll be pointless to carry out any propaganda against BNP,” he observed.
Another BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said their party will not participate in the polls if it is held under Sheikh Hasina. “We won’t allow anyone to hold any election without the participation of our chairperson Khaleda Zia as we did it in 2014.”
