The BNP-led 20-party alliance has alleged that the government wants to establish its full control over the judiciary and, for this it is going to pass the ’16th Constitution Amendment Bill’ in the Parliament. Addressing a rally in the city’s Suhrawardy Uddyan on Thursday afternoon, the alliance leaders said that the Awami League-led government has already politicised the judiciary. It is now putting the last nail in its coffin, said BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia at the rally. The alliance arranged the rally against the government’s move to re-empower the Parliament to remove the Supreme Court judges through the Amendment.The 20-party alliance had announced two-day protest programme against the government’s move terming as ‘anti-people’ bill. Earlier on Wednesday, it staged demonstration across the country except Dhaka city on the issue.Dhaka city BNP convener Mirza Abbas presided over the rally while BNP senior leaders Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Dr M Osman Faruk and Begum Selima Rahman, Jamaat leader Prof Tasneem Alam, Islami Oikya Jote chairman Maulana Abdul Latif Nejami and Jatiya Party (Zafar) secretary general Mostafa Jamal Haidar addressed it, among others.Rafiqul Islam Mia said that the government has already cheated with the countrymen through providing misinformation in the preamble of the Amendment Bill. It is conspiring to enable the Parliament to remove judges with an evil move to snatch the independence of the judiciary, he added.Saying that the people would not get the justice if the Bill is passed in the House, the BNP leader alleged that Sheikh Hasina is doing it in a bid to cling to power through establishing one-party BAKSAL rule again. Mirza Abbas said what you desire you can do it, but you should remember that nothing would be left without challenge. He said that the current Parliament is illegal and it has no right to amend the Constitution. If it is done, it will be considered as illegal move, he added.
