BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that the government is not sincere about resolving the Rohingya crisis.
“The hands of the government as well as the State would have been stronger today had the government taken united efforts on the issue taking all the opposition parties and people on a single platform… But they’ve rejected its (BNP’s call for forging a unity). So, it has proved the government is not really sincere about resolving the Rohingya problem,” he said.
The BNP leader came up with the allegation while talking to reporters at a hotel in Cox’s Bazar.
Fakhrul flew to Cox’s Bazar earlier the day to distribute relief materials among
Rohingya refugees. “We’ve been saying we don’t want to do politics over the Rohingya issue. We’ve called for forging a national unity to stand beside them on humanitarian ground,” he said.
The BNP leader said the government has yet to term ‘genocide’ the acts of brutality against Rohingyas in Myanmar.
He also alleged that the government could not yet send its delegations to foreign countries, especially to the ones which have been supporting the Myanmar government.
“Our main goal is to repatriate Rohingyas to their own country with dignity and realising their citizenship as well as ensuring safety. We’ll have to carry on the efforts through a national unity [to achieve the goal],” he said.
Citing his party’s different activities taken for the Rohingya refugees, Fakhrul said 22 trucks carrying relief items have already reached Cox’s Bazar and those distributed among Rohingyas under the supervision of a BNP team, led by its standing committee member Mirza Abbas.
“Our teams regularly come to remote areas of Ukhia and Teknaf to distribute relief items. Our medical teams are also working to provide healthcare services to ailing Rohingyas,” he said.
He said his party and its leaders have been working for Rohingyas from the day one.
BNP leaders Abdus Salam, Mujibur Rahman Sarwar and Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anny were, among others, present.
