The government has moved forward to import onion from foreign countries by air on emergency basis after prices of the key kitchen staple crossed over Tk 200 per kg in the city’s kitchen market, breaking all the previous record.
Admitting the matter, Commerce Secretary Md Jafar Uddin said on Friday that the state-run
Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) and S Alam Group would import the onions by air cargo initially.
“Importing onion by air cargo will continue until the price of the essential cooking ingredient come down to normal level,” he said.
Jafar further said that, a Deputy Secretary has been sent to Turkey for importing onion. Moreover, another Deputy Secretary is currently in Egypt for the same purpose.
