Govt modernizing rly to reduce traffic jam

The government has taken initiatives to develop railway as a modern public transport to ease traffic congestion in the capital and help people travel around the city comfortably.
Railways Minister M. Mujibul Huq on Tuesday said the government has been undertaken various steps for modernization of railway giving priority to ensuring easy transportation for the people in the capital and its adjoining areas.
Some of the initiatives have already been implemented and some are under implementation, he said, adding that traffic jam has eased to some extend because of those steps.
There will be no traffic jam in the city and adjoining areas when all the projects would be implemented, he hoped and said that the government is implementing different development projects in railway sector since 2009 with a view to materializing ‘Vision-2021.’
Though railway remained neglected for long in the country, constant development activities of the present government has already turned it into a safe, low-cost and environment friendly mode of transport with rising number of passengers.
Mujibul Huq said the government has procured 20 sets of diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) trains from China for the capital and other important cities of the country.
With these DEMUs, 16 pairs of commuter trains are plying between Dhaka and Narayanganj while four pairs between Dhaka and Joydevpur.
