The government may extend the ongoing general holidays further until the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation as part of its efforts to prevent the transmission of the deadly virus.
State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain on Tuesday said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will take final decision about the general holiday.
“The government is yet to take any decision in this regard. If the Prime Minister decides on holiday
extension, she’ll do it considering the Eid holidays,” he said.
The junior minister said the government may announce its decision on the public holiday either on Wednesday or Thursday.
However, a high official of the ministry said the government is considering to extended the holidays until Eid as there are only four working days before the vacation of the religious festival.
As per the holiday calendar of the government, May 21 is Shab-e-Qadr holiday, May 22 and 23 are weekly holidays and May 24 to 26 are Eid holidays.
On March 23, the government declared general holidays from March 26 to April 4, in a bid to protect people from being infected by the fast spreading virus as elsewhere in the world.
Later, the holidays were extended until May 16 in different phases.
