Govt made mark in women empowerment : FM

Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali yesterday said that the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made its mark in women empowerment, continuing with renewed zeal the efforts for gearing up women empowerment in the country.
Outlining the programmes undertaken by the government to ensure girls’ education, Mahmud Ali said it waived tuition fees for girl students and imparted massive training programs to them.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been conferred upon Global Women’s Leadership Award for her outstanding leadership in advancing women education and women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, Asia and Asia-pacific region, he added.
The foreign minister said this as chief guest at the sixth convocation of the Asian University for Woman at hotel Radisson blue on Saturday afternoon.
He laid importance on imparting proper education to women for their empowerment in society.
Addressing on the occasion as the convocation speaker Nobel Laureate Tawakkol Karman said without proper education, it’s not possible to empower women. The empowerment of women is not so easy but Bangladesh is exceptional to achieve it, she added.
“I love Bangladesh”, she said and uttered “Joy Bangla” in her concluding remark.
Chancellor of the university Cherry Blaire, Chairman of Board of Trusty Dr Dipu Moni, MP, founder of the University Kamal Ahmed, Vice chancellor Professor Nirmolla Rao, among others, addressed the function.
A total of 169 students were awarded degrees in the convocation.
Nobel Peace winner Tawakkol Karman and former Vice President of World Bank Ismail Serajeldin were also awarded honorary doctorate degree in the convocation.
