About 0.66 acres of government land in Tangail that had been grabbed by former minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui has been recovered after 47 years.
The land, worth about Tk50 crore, was recovered during a drive led by Executive Magistrate Rozlin Shahid Chowdhury and Sadar upazila Assistant Commissioner Khairul Islam in Tangail’s Akurtakur Para area on Sunday morning.
Speaking to media, Sadar upazila Assistant Commissioner Khairul Islam said: “The land was leased to former minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui. At one point he forged documents and illegally claimed ownership of the government land. He had been in possession of this land for the last 47 years.
“After the Hindus left Bangladesh [then East Pakistan] during the partition of India in August 1947, this land was transferred to the government. It will remain this way, indefinitely,” he added.
Echoing the same, Executive Magistrate Rozlin Shahid Chowdhury said the former minister had illegally occupied the piece of government land by using fake documents.
“The High Court has ruled in favour of the government in the case filed over this issue. Subsequently, Deputy Commissioner of Tangail Md Ataul instructed us to demolish the illegal establishments built on the government land,” he added.
