Govt issues teachers’ social media using guidelines

The government has issued six-point directives as teachers’ new guidelines about use of social medias.
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education sent the guidelines to principals of all government colleges of the country on Thursday.
The guidelines say that the social medias are widely used for imparting lessons, drafting and
implementing education policies and it is vital to the country’s progress.
The guidelines calls the teachers to refrain from such activities which can “tarnish the image of the government or the state”.
The teachers have been asked to stay away from uploading, sharing, commenting or interacting with any controversial posts, photos, videos or audio clips that can harm government or state’s image.
They are also asked to ensure that institutions or services of national importance are not degraded by their posts on social media.
Data and information that hurts the religious sentiments or go against the spirit of national unity must not be part of teachers’ posts or sharing in social media.
It also asked them to abstain from uploading, sharing or commenting posts that could hamper the communal harmony or disrupt law and order.
Heads of the institutions can take immediate action against those defying the directives, if necessary, can inform the directorate through the regional office with evidence of the violation after a probe.
The Cabinet Division has also issued guidelines to regulate the conduct of government employees using social media.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Administration also issued a circular asking government officials to refrain from uploading, sharing and commenting on any post which may contain derogatory remarks about people of national significance.
The government will take legal action against those who defy the ministry’s guidelines.
